Abstract
Toddlers are one of the most at-risk populations exposed to various health problems (illness and death). According to WHO, toddler mortality rate (TMR) is as high as 35 for every 1000 live births in 2012. Indonesia Demographic and Health Survey (IDHS), 2012. TMR in Indonesia is as high as 32 per 10,000 live births (Indonesian Health Ministry, 2015a). In North Sulawesi province, the TMR is as high as 35 per 1,000 live births. (Health Profile of North Sulawesi Province, 2010). Based on 2013 Primary Health Research, the most cause of infant mortality is due to neonatal respiratory problems (35.9%), prematurity (32.4%), sepsis (12%), hypothermia (6.3%), blood disorder /jaundice (5.6%), post-maturity (2.8%) and congenital abnormalities (1.8%) (Indonesian Health Ministry, 2015b). One of the strategy to accelerate the reduction of TMR is by increasing community access to a better health services at both basic and referral levels, to mobilize and encourage the empowerment of women, families and communities for healthy living, to mobilize the use of maternal and child health guidance books, to improve surveillance systems, monitoring and information on child health. The purpose of this research is to rule out the influence regarding the implementation of the mothertoddler classroom training on the knowledge of the under-five mother about child growth and development at the Upper Teling Primary Health Care in Manado.
This is an an experimental research, utilizing pretest-post test with control group design. The study design was a two 2 stages observational study using control group, ie prior to training (pretest)
and after the training (post test) to rule out the effect of the mother toddler training on the improvement of mother knowledge regarding child growth. The intervention group will be provided with the mother’s-toddler class training while the control group will not be provided with the mother toddler training class. The research subject is the mother of the toddler who admitted to the Primary Helath Care. The data was obtained from the pre-test questionnaire and the final test questionnaire completed by the 12 participants intervention group of the 2-day training toddler class, and control group of 12 people who did not attend the toddler class training. The data were analyzed using the ttest test statistic test.
Results of the research with t-test (paired) to determine whether there was a significant influence of mother’s class training to increase the parent knowledge about child growth at Upper Teling Primary Health Care in Manado City demonstrate a p value 0.0001 <0,.05 in intervention group and p value 0.409> 0.05 in the control group. The result of the analysis reveals that there is a very significant effect of the learning process using the mother-to- toddler class on the improvement of parent’s knowledge about children’s growth.
