Abstract

Traditional medicine is an alternative for metabolic and degenerative diseases that require the use of a drug with a long period of time because the side effects are relatively small when used appropriately and rationally. Red Beans (Vigna angularis [Willd] Ohwi & Ohashi) contain B vitamins, especially folic acid and vitamin B1, calcium, phosphorus, iron, and protein, is also a source of soluble fiber and water insoluble. Soluble fiber is beneficial to reduce the concentration of cholesterol and blood sugar. This study aimed to determine the effects of red bean porridge to decrease cholesterol levels and increased levels of uric acid.
This type of research is the design of laboratory experiments with pre - posttest control group. The sample used was Red Beans beans Vigna angularis [Willd] Ohwi & Ohashi ) obtained in Manado, North Sulawesi. Animal testing is a white rat (Rattus norvegicus L.) males as much as 20 head 3-4 months old and weighing between 200 - 300g. Test animals were divided into four treatment groups, namely group I, negative control with distilled water giving 2.5 ml/200g BB; Group II, giving a red bean porridge with a 1:1 volume of 2.5 ml/200g BB administration; Group III, granting red bean porridge 1:2, 2.5 ml/200g BB; group IV, giving a red bean porridge 1:3, 2.5 ml/200g BB. The results showed that the administration of red bean porridge can lower total blood cholesterol levels and does not cause a rise in blood uric acid levels in test animals
